1873: In a street called La Redoute in the town of Roubaix in northern France, textile manufacturer Charles Pollet sets up a wool mill.

 

1922: Charles Pollet successfully launches into mail-order retail and rapidly becomes one of the leading mail-order retailers in Europe, covering 21 countries and 18 million customers.

 

1922-1930: Early days


Starting in 1924, «Les Filatures de La Redoute» publish knitting and crochet albums.


April 1925: 1st issue of the magazine "Pénélope, travaux de laine et Mode", of which a one-year subscription is given to any customer ordering wool.

1928: celebration for the 600,000th customer!

 

1930-1940: The Knitting Years


1931: «Les Filatures de La Redoute» publish their first "special fantasy hosiery" catalogue.

1935. Introduction of the "Usage Redoute" stamp with an oak leaf as its emblem symbolising strength and solidity, for selected and guaranteed articles.

 

1949: After 10 years of interruption due to the war, the first catalogue (32 pages) comes out in 1949.

 

1950: The Comfort Years
After the hardships of war, women's fashion presents the ideal housewife.

In 1956, «Les Filatures de La Redoute» launch the "Ventac" catalogue, dedicated to the home and leisure. The first synthetic fibres appear (Tergal, Nylon, Rhovyl, etc.) and in 1959 the first colour catalogue is published.

 

1960-1970: The pop music years


In 1962, the catalogue lists 46,000 items! In 1963 "««Les Filatures de La Redoute»" officially becomes "La Redoute". Mireille Mathieu, Sylvie Vartan and France Gall present the leading models and announce the reign of the mini-skirt! The year 1966 marks the start of collaboration with the magazine ELLE which puts a label on its favourite products. Telephone selling and the Kangourou card are introduced in 1969. In the same year, Emmanuelle Khanh designs 32 exclusive models for La Redoute. She is the instigator of a new policy of collaboration with fashion designers.

 

1970-1980: The TV Years

1971: no more drawn figures, the catalogue is now entirely made up of photos. It's the era of television, of "everything plastic" and gadgets. Starting in 1973, green vans with the slogan "quick, we're delivering" criss-cross France. In 1975, the first Rendez-Vous Catalogue (delivery store) opens up.
It's the age of synthetics, jerseys, bell-bottoms and new wash-and-wear fabrics!

 

1980-1990: The Designer Years


1985: La Redoute supports Marithé and François Girbaud, Chantal Thomass, Popy Moreni, Anne-Marie Beretta and others. The catalogue pages now feature young people's brands such as Levi's, Et Vous, Equipement and Bensimon. Customers order by Minitel and pay by credit card. Staring in 1984, they receive their orders within 48 hours. In 1986, articles guaranteed 6 months are given the label "Best".

 

1990-2000: The Haute Couture Years


En 1992, for the first time La Redoute invites a famous designer, Marc Aubidet, to create a collection for a section called "The Guest of the Season": a contemporary touch to meet the new desire for luxury and glamour.

1994: launch of an internet server for orders. 1995: launch of delivery within 24 hours.

2000: The Star Years


La Redoute continues to support the new generation of designers by publishing the winner of the Hyères Fashion Festival, as well as Vanessa Bruno, Isabel Marant and Bali Barret.
Accessories play a prominent role and shoes become objects of desire. Audrey Marnay, Noémie Lenoir and Genna Ward become fashion stars.
Then La Redoute takes over the web: we now talk about home shopping. This e-commerce leader is now celebrating its 10th anniversary.
